Víctor Hugo Pachas is a Doctor in Social Anthropology awarded by the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos. His professional portfolio encompasses advisory services to the extractive sector and sustainable natural resource management. He has demonstrated extensive multinational involvement, and assumed leadership positions in Peru, while working with counterparts across South America, North America, and Europe. His experience ranges from grounding international agreements in through the design of specific programs, to work with indigenous people, governments and small-scale businessmen. He has engaged in diverse roles within the private sector and international cooperation, which he seamlessly integrates with his responsibilities in undergraduate and postgraduate university instruction. These dimensions have played a pivotal role in shaping his identity as a researcher and author, focusing his work on articles and books that highlight the cultural perspectives associated with the uses of natural resources, particularly in the context of small-scale extractive activities and indigenous communities, in the Andes and the Amazon regions of South American countries.

Education 
  • Doctor in Social Sciences with a specialization in anthropology, conferred by Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos on March 13, 2020. For his doctoral thesis, he received grants from the «Conflicts in Gold Mining in the Amazon – GOMIAM» (a program funded by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research NOW – WOTRO); and the Programme Conflict and Cooperation over Natural Resources in Developing Countries – CoCooN (2011-2015).
  • Master´s degree in Conflict Resolution, obtained from Universidad San Martín de Porres on October, 2023
  • Master´s degree in Anthropology, obtained from Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos on January 27, 2012. These postgraduate studies were funded by a scholarship from the “Regional Scholarship Program for Postgraduate Studies” by the Belgian Embassy in Peru (2007-2008). For his Master´s thesis, he received grants from the «Young Researcher Scholarship 2007» and the «Researcher Scholarship in Artisanal Mining and Information and Communication Technology (2007),» awarded by from the Seminario Permanente de Investigación Agraría.
  • Bachelor´s Degree in Anthropolog, awarded by Universidad Nacional Federico Villarreal on December 21, 2005.

  • Religion and secularization. It studies the religious processes of Andean culture.
  • Andean economy and extractive activities. Research supply chains for different metals
  • Politics, Violence and uncertainty. Investigates conflict processes and Organized crime
  • Cultural history of metals. Study of colonial chronicles to analyze Andean culture.
  • Environmental ethics. From a pragmatic perspective, it analyzes the debate on the environment and extractivism.
